Is the world literally moving too fast for you? Do you suffer from frequent and severe attacks of vertigo? Better see a doctor fast. You could be a victim of Meniere's disease. Meniere's disease is a disturbance of the inner ear that controls our sense of balance or equilibrium. Any defect in this part of the body will naturally lead to vertigo and loss of balance. In the case of Meniere's disease, this condition may occur daily or every few years. Bouts of dizziness may last for a few minutes to an hour or longer. Other symptoms are episodes of deafness, a ringing or buzzing sound in the affected ear, pain, nausea and vomiting. The disease may strike anyone but usually affects people over 40...

Can't quite keep a tune? Tone deafness can seem like a final verdict on your potential for singing. But when you think of yourself as "tone deaf", you are actually falling prey to a very common misunderstanding. Tone Deafness and How You Can Learn To Sing In Tune The statistics run so that you would probably be hard-pressed to count on one hand all the people that you know that are actually, clinically tone deaf. It's that rare - and it means that you cannot distinguish a high whining sound from a low bass sound. You very probably are not tone deaf. You simply have not had much practice using your voice apparatus when you were younger. It's a learnable skill like any other and exposure leads to...

Owning a dog that has no hearing can be both a rewarding and educating experience. Owning a dog that has good hearing and sight can often lead us into being a little lazy, when it comes to establishing effective patterns of communication between us and our pet. For the most part we struggle through with a few voice commands and maybe the occasional hand signal, that often change depending on the situation. Fortunately, in a lot of situations our dogs learn to navigate their way around our impromptu communication style and, begin to 'catch on' to what it is we want from them. Owning a deaf dog however is a different story; many owners of deaf dogs testify to how much their lives have changed since...

When hearing loss strikes, whether it is a gradual onset process or sudden deafness, several emotional stages will follow. Knowing what these stages are and how they might affect you or your loved one will help you understand the process and move through the various stages more easily. What are these stages? Actually, there are five stages here, much as there are five stages in the grieving process. Some experts point out that there are other similarities here, as the person losing their hearing is actually grieving for their lost faculty. Stage One: Denial Denial is the first stage of the process, just as it is with many other traumatic experiences. Losing one's hearing is certainly a traumatic...

The bone anchored hearing aid (or Baha) is a surgically implanted system for treating hearing loss. The system uses direct bone conduction, where sound is conducted through the bone rather than through the middle ear and has been used successfully since 1977. FDA approval in the United States came in 1996, allowing its use as treatment for conductive and mixed hearing loss. The Baha has three main parts. There is an implant, an external abutment and a sound processor. These three parts work together to enhance natural bone transmission and provides a pathway for sound to enter the inner ear that bypasses the external auditory canal and middle ear. The implant consists of a tiny titanium piece...

Hearing problems are quite common after a traumatic brain injury (TBI) because the inner ear is directly connected to the central nervous system. Ringing in the ear (tinnitus) and hearing loss are two of the most widely reported side effects of a traumatic brain injury. Some other hearing problems that may occur following a brain injury include hyperacusis (normal situations seem very loud); difficulty filtering one set of sounds from background noise; and auditory agnosia (also called pure word deafness). Auditory agnosia is a condition in which the person is unable to recognize the meanings of certain sounds. Following a TBI, hearing problems can occur for a number of reasons, both mechanical and...

Dalmatian health issues should not keep you from owning this wonderful breed of dog as they are still extremely healthy dogs as well as very loyal and protective companions. They make excellent guard dogs and terrific family pets. In fact, several experts have claimed them to be almost people like in nature as they absolutely love to be around people and families. Dalmatians are classified as a non-sporting breed primarily because they have a wide variety of talents. In fact, their sense of smell is so strong and defined, that they were used both in World Wars as well as in Vietnam to guard our troops and alert them. Their keen sense of smell also makes them excellent tracking dogs as well as search...

As with eyes, serious infections of the inner ear should be referred to a specialist. There are two main types of translators: translators who work with anything written or published, and interpreters, who listen and translate a voice as it is being spoken. Translators may work on software, internet related materials or a variety of documents, including legal, business-related, technical, or “literary” texts, and is generally paid by the word. Interpreters are normally paid by the hour at business conferences, courts or government proceedings. Simultaneous interpreting is probably the most difficult discipline of translation as the interpreters need to be highly trained and fluent to interpret the voice of the speaker in real time. While translators can find their profession very...

Translation Equipment (or to use its more correct names: simultaneous interpreting equipment or simultaneous interpretation equipment) is used in conferences and meetings to convey the voice of an interpreter to the listeners. You've probably seen pictures of the United Nations where the delegates each have a little earpiece – that's translation equipment. Specifically, that's the earpiece attached to the receiver. Here's how it works: At the back of the room (or in an adjacent room) a team of interpreters sits in a sound-dampening booth, listening to the presenter through headphones. They do the hard part: they simultaneously listen and interpret what they hear into another language. Their voice...

The following are 7 sure-fire steps for legal professionals such as attorneys, solicitors, lawyers and barristers wanting successful dealings with an interpreter. Step One Always, always use a qualified, professional and experienced interpreter. A friend's girlfriend who speaks Spanish and lived in Chile for 6 years is not good enough. Even if she has a degree in the Spanish language it does not make her an interpreter. Yes, she would be convenient and cheap, but it could result in evidence thrown out of court, poor communication and downright messy results. Professional interpreters are qualified linguists who do this for a living and understand how to do it well with standards, ethics and due...

We live in an era of unusual disruption of cultures, lives and businesses by technologies. As a little boy, I listened to folklore under the moonlight in my south eastern part of Nigerian village. The elders told the stories of justice, bravery, honor and humanity. There was no cellphone and there was no distraction. Life was under a predictable pattern especially in the evenings when boys and girls will wait in turns to play under the moonlight and receive moral education carefully orchestrated in the stories told by the elders. Every child belongs to the village and parents are nothing but stewards. As we trekked miles to fetch water and firewood for the family cooking, we enjoyed the songs of the...

e found that most software companies like to promote how easy it is to transfer your VHS tapes to DVD when using their software. Although their products do make this process very easy, I have found that the final video on DVD is worse then the original VHS tape. After trying several common VHS to DVD software products I became frustrated that I could not achieve the original video quality of the original VHS tape. DVD technology surpasses VHS tapes by a long shot and in my mind there is no reason why there should be any degeneration of video quality after the transfer. After much trial and error and hundreds of hours spent I have written this article. This article reviews three (3) popular software...

In the world of interpretation you basically have two modes or types of interpretation. They are simultaneous interpretation and consecutive interpretation. Simultaneous is sometimes also called simultaneous translation or conference interpretation. The most common form of interpretation is consecutive interpretation. In this type of interpretation a speaker says something and then pauses while the interpreter interprets what they said into another language. Then the interpreter stops and the speaker continues with the rest of his or her statement. This pausing is the reason that it is called "consecutive", meaning, one after the other. In situations in which there is more than one person having a...

Interpretation has always been a crucial tool to bridge language gaps and to facilitate effective communications. Whether to use the consecutive or simultaneous interpreter will depend on the requirements of the client. First, let's see the major differences: Simultaneous interpretation The interpreters sit in a sound-proof booth, listen to the speaker through interpretation headsets and interpret on a real-time basis from the source language to the target language. This requires high levels of concentration and it is recommended to have a pair of interpreters to alternate every 15-30 minutes. Simultaneous interpretation is usually ideal for events with a large number of participants broadcasting in...

Interpretation is of two types: simultaneous and consecutive. The term ‘simultaneous interpretation’ is self-explanatory. In it, the interpreter speaks simultaneously, translating to the target language while listening to the original message in the source language. In consecutive interpretation, the interpreter listens to chunks of the message in the original language and interprets at intervals. For this, the interpreter may either take notes (in notations or short forms) so that long passages may be interpreted accurately, or may rely on memory to interpret shorter messages. In a practical context, consecutive interpretation takes place when the interpreter does not have all of the text, but...

If you have just become aware that you have undergone some hearing loss or you have just become able to do something about your condition, you will need to be able to evaluate the different kinds of hearing aids. Assuming that you are not going to want an ear trumpet, there are three main options: analogue, digital or hybrid hearing aids. The analogue hearing aid is the least expensive of the three and it operates by picking up the sound with a microphone and amplifying it into your ear. Then there is the half-way house hybrid which is...

In 1965, Victoria Memorial Hall was used as a venue by the charity groups to host Christmas Fair, which was their very first to organize. On returning home one evening, from a very pleasant social occasion, with people who were in high positions in the land, I said to my wife, "This would be such a lovely world if it were not for sin!" One of the saddest sentences in the entire Bible is to be found in Genesis Chapter 6 and at verse 6. God is sorry that He made man. That was one sad and tragic situation, but it happened to be true! God's emotions have been touched and hurt. He created man, and placed man in the world to enjoy it and to be in control, but things have gone terribly wrong. When certain situations get out of hand, we tend to say - 'O boys will be boys' - or - 'let bygones be bygones'. God does not act like that in the...

You'll probably find him right beside Jeff. Sometimes, I wonder if God created dogs to teach us about unconditional love and loyalty. Cats -- well, that's some other lesson. Let's get down to basics. Preston, 11, says he experiences God's love "because I get up every day, and I am able to see and move all my body parts." How many of us thank God for body...

Do you ever find in life that some things are hard to see and accept? After a two year 'delay' Paul finally arrives in Rome. We read all about in Acts Chapter 28, and after only three days, he is hard at work, using every available opportunity open to him. Paul called for the Jewish leaders in Rome. Why the Jews? He begins first with those who should be able to understand - those of his own background - those who believed in God. He had done this in all the various centres which he has visited over these past twenty or so years. He needed to know the position of the Jewish leadership. This was his method, and it remained unchanged, even after all that they had said about him and against him...

Why it is that so many are deaf and blind to the reality of reincarnation? Why is it that so many have memory of previous lives? How come children are often born with skills they exhibit from infancy and which they have not learned in this life? Why is it that we can visit places we have never been and yet know everything about it? Why are some people more able to experience spiritual things while others deny the existence of any higher being? These are not just questions out of the blue but things that have puzzled me since my own reincarnation. When born with full memory of what it is like to be between lives and to know the Spirit in a way rarely known to others it was my task and my duty to find...

During the holidays most families are spending quality time together, shopping, ice-skating and, of course, children harassing their parents about getting them the latest and greatest toy. It is a special time of year that engenders feelings of hope, happiness and belonging. We are reminded that family is an essential part of our lives and the blessings that come with being part of one. So it is no wonder that during the holidays it can be quite challenging for families going through a divorce. Joyce Brothers once said, "For some reason, we see divorce as a signal of failure, despite the fact that each of us has a right, and an obligation, to rectify any other mistake we make in life."
