Most people don't believe that they will ever go deaf. As arguably the body's most important sense along with sight - the ability to hear what is going on around us is something we often take for granted. However, many who work in loud environments at work find they begin to lose their hearing - through no fault of their own. This is when industrial deafness claims can be made. A prime example of such work-related hearing damage was reported recently, when it was revealed that ex-pottery workers from the Midlands city of Stoke-on-Trent may be entitled to make claims - many of whom had been working long hours around loud machinery. Despite this, it was only after 15 former workers secured injury...
Suffering from industrial deafness or hearing loss can be frustrating at best, and life-changing at worst. The effects can be devastating and often get worse over time, meaning an accident or prolonged exposure at work can have a detrimental effect long after the sufferer has ceased employment there. Despite the number of Britons suffering with work related hearing loss, many sufferers are unaware that they can claim against their employer or ex-employer for the compensation they deserve, which can help with medical bills, pay for necessities or improve quality of life. There is also a fear of claiming, as some victims feel they are being disloyal or that they could never win against a 'fat cat...
Grandmother Stuart had been deaf for twelve years when I was born, a victim of the 1919 influenza epidemic. Because she was a widow, unable to fend for herself in a hearing world, she spent six months with each daughter. She arrived at our home each fall as regularly as the robins deserted Pittsburgh for warmer climes. Since my father was the only one of her two sons-in-law willing and able to make the rugged 300-mile round trip from Pittsburgh to Ritchie County, West Virginia, it fell upon him to set aside several days each fall and spring for the ritual of delivering Grandmother to the daughter next on her schedule. The three adults were wedged into the front seat of our vintage Chevrolet coupe...

Acoustic Neuroma Hearing Loss - Strategies For...
Often one of the symptoms of acoustic neuroma is single sided hearing loss. Depending on the tumor size, type of treatment and other factors, single sided deafness or near deafness can be one of the outcomes of treatment. If you are living with one sided hearing loss or deafness, you may be familiar with some of the following scenarios. You are walking down the street, or across campus, or through a parking lot. You are in a noisy restaurant at a work related meeting. You can't hear the person beside you on the...
Industrial Deafness and Tinnitus
There are a lot of problems seen today where work is concerned, and one of these is hearing problems such as industrial deafness and tinnitus. When you work around a lot of loud or noisy machinery all day it only makes sense that you might experience some hearing problems after a while. This can happen to anyone as they get older, but they are seen in younger people when they have industrial-type jobs where they must work around sudden, frequent loud noises or long, sustained periods of louder-than-normal noise. Both of these types of noise can cause deafness over time, and they can also lead to tinnitus, which is a ringing or roaring noise in one or both ears. This can come and go, but in severe...

Though deafness in dogs and cats is not a dangerous condition, early detection and proper treatment is absolutely necessary for the well being of your pets. In most cases the first sign of deafness is when pets stop responding to commands or loud noises. The progress of deafness in dogs is usually slow. Moreover dogs try to compensate the hearing loss with their other sharp senses which is the reason why most pet owners fail to detect their pet's deafness in time. Dogs in the early stages of deafness are confused or unsure of the commands and as the deafness progresses they slowly stop responding to commands altogether. Some of the other symptoms are sleeping for prolonged periods, waking only when...

There are a considerable number of people who have trouble with singing in tune, and who often resort to lip synching during religious services and choral concerts. Most people refuse to sing in public, restricting their singing to the daily shower or the drive to work. If you feel you may be tone deaf, you are by no means alone. Surveys reveal that one out of every seven people consider themselves to be tone deaf. If you're tone deaf, that doesn't necessarily mean that you have hearing problems or are unable to hear music correctly; after all, many inept singers enjoy listening to music very much. The quite high percentage of the tone deaf population lessens when you apply the term in a more...
Some people are born totally or partially deaf; others become deaf gradually, usually after the age of about 50. Both conditions fall into one of two main categories: Conductive deafness, which is mostly curable, and nerve deafness, which is usually not curable. Conductive deafness is due to something hindering the transmission of sound waves to the cochlea, the sound sensitive organ of inner ear. It can have a number of causes including infections, earwax, sudden loud noises, foreign objects such as a bead in a child's ear, and otosclerosis (a fusion of the small bones in the middle ear, which mainly affects women aged between 20 and 40). Nerve deafness occurs when the auditory nerve which carries...
Testing Your Dog For Deafness
What is the best deaf dog test? The only reliable method for determining canine deafness is the BAER test (pronounced "bear") and it stands for "Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response". It is a procedure developed to test hearing in infants, which means that it does not measure the entire range of canine hearing, but in most cases it is not necessary as the deaf dog will show to lack hearing within the normal human range of sounds. Some dogs that will test as deaf will be able to hear ultrasounds or very high pitches. The only way to know this is to buy an ultrasound whistle or ultrasound device to make dogs stop barking. That is how I found out that my Dalmatian was deaf to ultrasounds as well. The...
Deafness in Cats
The ears of cats are sensitive and delicate; as such, they are prone to being damaged or infected, sometimes leading to deafness. Cats can also be deaf right from birth through a genetic defect. Deafness in cats isn't terribly common of course, but it is more common in blue eyed, white haired cats. Cats can be deaf in one ear or in both ears and your cat has to be tested in order to check for deafness and how prevalent it is. There are two forms of deafness in cats: conduction and neurologic. Conduction Deafness through conduction is caused by things like wax build up, infections and damage done to the delicate membranes in the ears. Conduction deafness usually comes about if the cat's ears aren't...
Online Scammers Target Interpreters ("The...
By now, many people (though unfortunately not everyone) have become aware of the tactics used by the so-called "419" or "Nigerian" scammers. The victim is lured by the promise of a percentage of a huge fortune that has to be secretely transfered out of some African country. Variations of the scam include supposedly winning "internet lotteries" or having a relative that you never heard of die and allegedly leave you millions. In each case, the scammer tries to get the victim to send money for various "fees". Over the years, these scams, which were once easy to distinguish by their combination of purple prose and bad grammar, have become more sophisticated. One of the latest variations targets a...
Court Translators Versus Court Interpreters
The demand for multilingual professionals is ever important in today's multicultural world. This is especially true in the court system, where it is vital that all participants be able to understand each other clearly. Court interpreters and court translators make this possible. There is a common misunderstanding that a "court interpreter" and a "court translator" are the same thing but in actual fact, they are two very different jobs and require different sets of skill. Some things they do have in common, are the absolute fluency in two or more languages (generally the language of the court system and at least one other), an understanding of legal terms in those languages, and a general "feel" for...
Interpreters Improve Communication in Legal...
When it comes to legal cases, it is important that all parties understand each other and communicate well, especially in depositions. A legal deposition is a scheduled appointment where attorneys are allowed to ask questions of the witness under oath before the case goes to court. It helps both parties prepare their cases by knowing what the basic testimony of the witnesses will be. Sometimes the witnesses do not speak fluent English. It is very important for the witnesses and attorneys to understand each other, so a professional interpreter is brought in for depositions when needed. Depositions are usually recorded by professional court reporters. Their keystrokes are only effective for the...

How to Choose the Right Simultaneous...
So you've got an event coming up, and you know there will be some attendees who don't speak English. You tried taking a crash course in Japanese, but somehow it was more difficult than you expected. What will you try next? Probably the best idea would be to call a company that specializes in providing simultaneous interpreters and equipment for simultaneous interpreting at conferences. Although the term simultaneous translation is often used, strictly speaking, that is a misnomer. Translation means written form, whereas interpretation refers to the spoken word. It's important to make sure you ask for simultaneous interpretation, rather than consecutive interpretation. Simultaneous interpreting...

Being a language interpreter is a high pressure job that can come with a large amount of stress, and this amount of pressure is exemplified when working with world leaders. As we have all seen by watching parliament and conferences, these talks can get heated and an interpreter has to keep their cool in order to translate the language to the best of their ability. Verbal...
Crime Does Not Pay For Interpreters
This article follows an article published by the Daily Express 'Cost of translators for foreign criminals is £34M' (21 March 2010), which caused great concern and outrage amongst professional court and police interpreters. Indeed, the article is inaccurate from the outset: the title refers to translators (who deal with the written word) whereas the content of the article discusses interpreters (who deal with the spoken word). We decided to set the record straight and fight the corner for interpreters nationwide with the help of a public service interpreter and freelance translator, who commented that: Populist reports [like this] in the British press about how much foreigners (often equalled with...
The Law of Attraction - My Emotions Are...
p>Our emotions are vibrational interpreters. The law of attraction governs this universe that is vibrational in nature. It is the law above all laws. And our emotions are the attractors, they are like a magnet. Our emotions range from despair/fear at one end and joy/love/passion at the other end. On this scale fear/despair have the lowest frequency, meaning they emit low energy. There is a copy of this emotional scale on my blog or the creators of this scale are Jerry and Esther Hicks have a book called 'Ask and It is Given' where there is a copy as well. Now as we go up this scale from fear into revenge, anger, hurt & disappointment etc and then into the good feeling emotions of joy...

Vicarious Trauma Affecting Interpreters and...
Vicarious trauma is a phrase heard often in the victim service and medical professions. Crisis responders bear witness to the trauma that their clients and patients experience and are routinely provided opportunities to release some of the emotional burden that their work encompasses. Professional translators and interpreters act as language tools and are expected to perform like machines. Yet the very real nature of the interpreter's assignments has an emotional and physical impact that, if unaddressed, can significantly impair an individual's ability to perform their job. Language professionals may find that they are completing their assignments in a timely manner, but that they are unable to...
There are many possible nightmare scenarios in the life of an interpreter. Our interpreters at are supplied with an interpreting code of conduct to help them deal with some of the possible situations they might find themselves facing. Refusing bribes, conflicts of interest, confidentiality and impartiality are all in a day's work. But what do you do when the person you are interpreting for just can't stop talking? Sometimes delegates at United Nations conferences speak well beyond the expected 15 minutes or so, with Cuba's Fidel Castro once delivering a four-hour speech and an Indian politician, VK Krishna Menon, managing a staggering eight hours on the podium. Libya's Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, who...

"MEP" Whistleblower and the Use of...
Amazing that in this day and age of global, cultural and linguistic awareness, that a company would be willing to send unqualified linguist into a battle zone, but that is exactly what is being alleged. In an article released on September 8, 2010 by ABC News, they document and detail the claims of a former employee of Mission Essential Personnel (MEP) who claims that documents and scores have been falsified in order to meet their governmental contract demands. As a Language Service Provider (LSP) we often hear about the errors and wrongdoings of interpreters or of those who claim to be an "interpreter" or "translator" but have no formal training or knowledge of our industry. All You Need to Know About Interpreters and...
Interpreting has been an integral part of business for many years and never more has interpreting been needed as it has in the past two decades with mobility in the world and the need for communication. Interpreting is different from translation as it deals with the spoken word in the here and now, whilst translation deals more predominantly with the written word and takes place over a period of time. Interpreting therefore has a more specific and crucial time dependency so that the translation of meaning may not always be accurate if the pace of the process is particularly fast. Whilst translation is generally the name used for the conversion of language to language in the written word, the use of...
The sound of a newborn crying is certainly one of the most special things in life that many parents take for granted. The situation is different for a deaf parent. Not being able to hear your baby can be frustrating. What makes matters worse is the fact that the inability to perceive sound might put your baby's safety at risk. Luckily, technology has made it possible for companies to create baby monitors for deaf parents. A typical baby monitor informs parents each time their little bundles of joy require attention. The gadget usually functions by means of transmitting noise from the baby's room to a handheld receiver that can be easily placed inside a pocket or strapped around the...
On this article you will find information on collars for deaf dogs. I would like to make it clear that my dog Sabrina never had a training collar because I personally don't like them. My reason for this is that they have to be placed quite tight around the dog's neck for them to feel the vibration and some dogs find them traumatising. In addition, it is not a good idea to let a deaf dog off of their leash in an open area anyway (see living with a deaf dog) However, some people do and for this reason I have included some information about them as you will be the best judge of what is best for your dog. Vibrating collars are used to train deaf dogs because they provide the added benefit of acting like...

Television has provided information, excitement and entertainment to American families for over thirty years, but for many people, the sounds of the television simply could not be heard. In 1985 approximately 9% of the American population was hearing impaired, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. Because of closed captioning, those who have hearing loss are now able to enjoy a majority of popular prime time TV shows, as well as the presidential debates. One organization is responsible for providing 90 percent of the closed captioning for the shows we see on TV, and it is a non-profit organization that has been around since 1979. Even captioning for thousands of movies which are...

The way this service helps them is really simple and there is no need for them to get trained for using this service specially. To say simply using this service is much easier than using a TTY. A person who is already using a TTY can easily get adjusted to this and any person who is new also will easily understand will be able to use it efficiently. If you look at the options this call is having then you will agree to what I say. The service is so simple and it has lot of options for having a relay call. This relay calls are dependent on the computer than a TTY. A computer is more advanced than...

Deafness: Could It Affect Your Mobility?
If you can't hear what's going on, your mobility could be affected. Here are some points to consider if you think your hearing might not be as good as it used to be. Add to that the world is now a noisier place - traffic, television and aircraft noise pollution being some of the major culprits - and hearing loss becomes an even more acute issue. In fact, its been estimated that in twenty years time no less than one in five people in the Western World could have hearing problems. Although not directly related to lack of mobility, hearing impairment can affect a person's confidence when performing a...
Treating Acoustic Trauma (Sudden Deafness)...
The first line of natural therapy for acoustic trauma is immediate cessation of consumption of foods with added salt. In the 1990's, Japanese researchers learned that the commonly prescribed diuretic Lasix (furosemide) in combination with vitamin therapy greatly enhanced the chances of recovery if treatment was begun within four weeks of injury. You could, of course, ask your physician for a prescription. Lasix is extremely inexpensive (approximately US $0.10 per dose), but you can accomplish a similar effect by completely avoiding pickles, canned or processed foods, smoked meats, luncheon meats, and any other foods with a high-sodium content immediately after exposure to loud noise and for at least...

For the interpreter or translator venturing into a court for the first time the process can be somewhat daunting. Court hearings have their own nuances and particularities the interpreter may not appreciate if their experience is mainly from the health or business world. Is Court Reporting A Dying Profession?
The role of a court reporter is to maintain an accurate record of word for word transcripts of conversations, legal proceedings, meetings, and other circumstances requiring a documented account that will serve as legally binding evidence. Court reporters can be found working at court trials, providing translation services for the hearing impaired, assisting judges, recording depositions, and assisting attorneys. With the emergence of new advancements in technology, many people have thought that careers in court reporting were diminishing. Fortunately, this is not the case. Court reporters have adapted to the technology and are now in great demand. Real-time stenographic court reporters are viewed as...
Deafness, along with most forms of disability, has formed its own subculture in our society. That subculture includes all types of media, businesses that cater specifically to the deaf, even a pageant that showcases deaf women. With more than 30 contestants, the Miss Deaf America pageant has come a long way since its beginnings. The History of Miss Deaf AmericaThe Miss Deaf America Pageant began in 1966 as the brainchild of Douglas Burke. With the goal of finding the hidden talents of the deaf in the fields of visual and performing arts, Burke established a National Cultural Program with the National Association of the Deaf (NAD). There are many people that are interested in learning sign language. They want to do this not only to be able to communicate with the deaf community, but also to be able to use it in their business practices. If you are able to talk with the deaf using sign language then you will be able to offer them your services and help them as necessary. Although this seems like it is a shallow goal, many of those in the deaf community would welcome someone taking the initiative to learn sign language for this reason. If you have a large population of deaf people in your area, and most areas do, then this is typically a market that is totally untapped. According to U.S. Census records, one out of every 250...
Disabled People and PC Games
This topic hits home for me and I'll tell you why. My dad takes quite an interest in nearly everything I do. And I feel quite lucky because of that. However the problem I have is that I will tell him about certain games that he should play but I normally always forget... He has Cerebral Palsy, which in his case means he has limited dexterity in the right side of his body. Because of this he cannot use a standard Xbox controller for a start! And any game that requires 2 hands is out. The good news he can obviously use a mouse very well (more accurate than most!) with his left hand. So games with mouse control only are fine. But how many games are there that are mouse control only? Not many I can tell...
